God’s Gift of Love – December 17th, 2023

God’s gift of love was displayed when He created

Genesis 1:27-28
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

God’s gift of love was delivered in a cradle for Christmas

Isaiah 9:6-7
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7  Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over hiskingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

Luke 2:10-12
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.  11  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.  12  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

God’s gift of love was and is demonstrated at the cross

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died
for us.

God’s gift of love will be dramatically revealed when Christ returns

2 Timothy 4:8
Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing

Titus 2:13
It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,  13  while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.  14  For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.  15  According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.  16  For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.  17  After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.  18  Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Since God so loves us undeservingly, we should love others.

Sharing God’s love is demanded

Leviticus 19:33-34
“‘When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them.  34  The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

John 13:34
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one
another.

Sharing God’s love is a decision

1 Corinthians 12:31- 13:1-13
Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.  2  If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.  3  If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,  but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4  Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  5  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  6  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  7  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8  Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.  9  For we know in part and we prophesy in part,  10  but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.  11  When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.  12  For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13  And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Sharing God’s love is a discipline

Matthew 5:43-48
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  44  But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,  45  that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.  46  If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?  47  And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?  48  Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Luke 6:27
“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

Luke 6:35
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
